dnsb1Are your DNS settings configured for optimal performance?  Don’t know?  Well www.grc.comhas released a DNS Benchmarking utility that will not only test your configured DNS servers but also check a bunch of known DNS servers and thus provide you with a diagram of which servers perform best for you, along with this DNS servers are also tested for known security problems.

The tool is not ‘officially’ released as the documentation is not yet ready, but the tool is available for download and usage never the less;

Internet Radio – Part 1

I have never really done much research in the field of Internet Radio, guess I have enough to occupy my mind elsewhere 😉  but I just stumbled across what seem to be a quite cool Internet Radio App and I just might give it a spin; it’s free, it’s easy/intuitive, it can record and it has a LOT of preset radio stations world wide.

Caution using your GPS poi in Switzerland

switzerlandflagYes, believe it or not, in Switzerland it is actually illegal to use a GPS that has preloaded POI’s (Point of interest in Garmin terminology) or PND (or what ever they call it on your GPS unit) that warn about speed control cameras and police checkpoints etc.  If you are stopped and found using such a device it will be confiscated and you will be fined.

As from what I can tell it is only illegal if the device has loaded POI/PND for Switzerland speed camera’s/police checkpoints, the use of POI/PND for sights/hotels etc in Switzerland are still legal.  But mind you I got this from documents in German (not available in English) and my German is not all that good, so if you are passing Switzerland maybe you had better check yourself.

RCA Airnergy Charger Harvests Electricity From WiFi Signals

It would appear that RCA has developed some kind of gadget that can ‘harvest’ energy from WiFi signals, you could use this to eg. charge your cell phone totally wireless..

It sounds cool, but I am a bit sceptic – more in the line “I want to see it to believeit” 🙂  from what I have read elsewhere the energy available in the WiFi signal is so insignificant that it would take weeks or months to charge a cell phone battery.

But even if thisjust a vague first step, it is an important step in the right direction. Wireless power is bound to catch on..

Western Digital WD TV Live HD Media Player

During Christmas I visited a friend of mine, he had just invested in a “Western Digital WD TV Live HD Media Player” and ran a quick demo for me..  It actually looks quite nice with a lot of useful features, it streamed perfectly from his NAS even HD ran perfectly and it had YouTube support and whatnot 🙂  The remote seemed a bit toy-ish but was very responsive and worked much better than how it looked..

I have the XBOX 1 (Classic) with a boot chip and use XBMC on it, so to me there is little need to invest in this new box, that is until I get a HD tv then things might change 😉

NORMAL_FITIf you live in Denmark then this link may be interesting. Have you ever been annoyed about the problems in finding shirts or polo shirts that really fit, either they are too small or baggy.

Anyway of cause you could always go to a tailor and have them fitted or custom made, however the price has always been ridiculous, till now;

Bono – stick to singing!

I totally agree, Bono – stick to singing!, although I have the greatest respect for Bono’s effort in the third world issues and U2 music in general, then I still think Bono is missing the greater issue when thundering on about music piracy and ISP’s responsibility in the matter.

The music and film industry need to rethink their strategy – hard as it may be, it is a totally different reality we live in today compared to the CD/LP age.

Windows 7 – godmode

Now this is cool, on your Windows 7 machine create a new folder and name it;


GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

and it is immediately transformed into the mother of all Control Panels, you will have access to virtually any setting in Windows from one place.

UPDATE:
Later notes have it that you can replace the “GodMode” text string with anything as long as the GUID is the same, thus the title is a bit misrepresentive however it is still the ultimate “Control Panel”..  Should also work on some Windows Vista versions.
