Drop your USB stick, stop carrying around that dumb USB stick in order to syncronize data from your work pc and your laptop.  When you install Dropbox you get a ‘cloud-folder’ in which you can copy data to, a second later this is also available on your laptop..  easy as pie..

Well this is nothing ‘new’ or original, but it seem quite easy and its free so why not throw it at you.  If you like it you can upgrade from the free 2gb version to a paid 50 or 100gb solution.

screenshotproxyImagine this; You are at a public wifi spot, and they have locked down what pages you may visit by simple DNS or URL filtering, and you just have to visit Rapidshare.com where one of your friends have send you this important file!?  What to do?  Well actually you have to do this before you wind up in this mess, but once it’s done you can use it anywhere anytime to combat situations like this.

The thing you are looking for is PHProxy and the link is;
http://sourceforge.net/projects/poxy/

Basically what this will do is to setup a proxy website that you can browse through, easy as pie.

You need a server or webhotel that supports PHP, you upload the PHProxy files (about 3 files is all it takes), and once you connect to the site where these files are hosted you get your own Proxy start page. It works like this, once you enter the URL on the PHProxy start page then the server on where the PHProxy php files are stored will go get your page for you and display it, from your end it looks like you are just visiting www.YOURSITE.com (the name of the site where you uploaded the PHProxy files) while the content on this site is actually Rapidshare, Facebook or whatever is blocked.

It is utterly simple to setup and use, mind you though not all pages work perfectly with this solution 🙁 but what can you expect from 3 php files 🙂  never the less it is simple, free and work for your basic pages.

It would seem OpenDNSwill be getting some competition in the DNS field, as would be expected it’s Google that is fiddling with a new DNS service “Google Public DNS“..  It will be interesting to see whatGoogle will be offering.  As a side comment I can mention that OpenDNS has recently released a pay version of their free DNS service and added a few new services (antimalware etc) so you really should give it a spin if you have not already.

Want to try something else than IIS, Apache on a Windows platform?  Lighttpd may be worth a look 🙂

I actually stumbled across lighttpd when I was installing applications on my jailbroken Ipod touch, and it looked interesting…

I found a blogpost with getting started instructions;
http://www.winstonyw.com/2008/05/28/installing-lighttpd-and-php-on-windows/

I did not quite get PHP working just yet nor did I find out how to start the http server as a service, but there are tricks to running an app as a service so this should not be a showstopper.

How secure is it?  Well take a look here for advisories; http://secunia.com/advisories/search/?search=lighttpd

And now with no further delay here is the getting started guide (taken from the blog previously mentioned) with my comments; Read more

skreemrbatA new google like type search engine for music files has emerged, http://skreemr.com/advanced_search.jsp (the advanced search page), you can here search for music and the service will then scour the Internet for the MP3 you seek and return a list of possible links.  Once you click a link the music is ‘streamed’ to your computer (right click on the link and save link as will allow you to ‘download’ the music).

It also has a custom software which can be downloaded here;
http://songr.co.cc/

Legality;
Some in Denmark claim that this is not ‘true’ streaming as the file is downloaded before or during playback and that you thus is breaking the copyright.  I don’t know, it’s a gray zone so you need to consider both the legality in your country and your continence also…  never the less an interesting search option.

I just stumbled across this service, www.shopusa.com, it offers a US address to where you can order your goods in the US – from here they will be shipped to you in Europe (or where you live) completely legal with tax, vat and everything.

Sounds interesting, I have for a long time wanted to buy stuff from “Think Geek” however they offer only one shipment method and it is ridiculously expensive for Europe.

Danes, read this; http://pleasure.dk/shopping/artikel/159811/

I really got a kick out of this;

Here you will have the opportunity to see how websites looked in the past, it was funny looking at some of my old websites and reliving how they looked 🙂  Nostalgia.

vlcp1You likely already know about VLC player from VideoLan.org?  It is a nifty little player that has several cool features, like; it is free, it has build in codex’es and oh yeah it is free 😉

The really cool thing about VLC is that it come with build in codex’es, this is clever because it is often here mediaplaying go wrong, a user simply does not have the right codex and can not display a mediaclip, many PC users have downloaded a codex pack – however your old aunt Oda have not and cant watch the videoclips you put on your website..  Well VLC deal with this by integrating the codexes, this way you wont have to think about it.

In the past the VLC player had one drawback, it was ugly and un userfriendly, however in the first final (it has been in beta for many years now) version this seem to be fixed..  the player looks nice and is easy to navigate..

Download it here;
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

Just before I was about to post this I was informed about another player very similar;kmplayer
http://kmplayer.en.softonic.com/ KMPlayer
looks very nice (possibly even a bit better than VLC, so give it a spin also)..

light11Every once in a while you tend to come across something really cool, today was such a day..

A while back I added a “Commercials no thank you!” on my mailbox (in Denmark most companies respect these), and what a relief 🙂  earlier I would carry 1-2 plastic bags down to the recycling bin every week filled with commercials, and I actually only read a fraction of these.  On the down side, now the few commercials I actually DID read I have no access to any more 🙁  so it was a bitter sweet victory.

Along with a random browsing for whatever came http://minreklame.dk/ and THIS is smart, someone has actually taken the time to gather electronic versions of the printed commercials and put them on a central site, and furthermore made them search-able.  Clever clever stuff.

2009-06-20_0148So I wanted to implement some easy way to share content from my blog, and came across www.addthis.com and just by adding a few lines of code to my php pages it was up and running..  They have a plugin for WordPress, but that is really not nessesary – you just add a few lines of code  to the right places in your .php pages and it’s up and running.

The service is free and it seem to have an ok gui and work fairly well.  So give your blog a Facebook etc. overhaul 🙂
